About COAR

« Mission Statement »

COAR is a diverse group of students serving community needs through an active exchange of service and learning while continually striving to find solutions to problems that challenge the community.

– Who Can Join COAR? –

Any student, new or old, can volunteer with COAR. We are made up of 1 Student Director, 3 Staff members, a Council, an Events Crew, and hundreds of general volunteers. COAR staff resides in the lower level of Seacobeck Hall to help facilitate all service programs and activities. Our Council is made up of student leaders who head each of the COAR programs and serve as a liaison to the outside agencies. The Events Crew is a group of students who help run our bigger events on campus for students and the community.

Our COAR programs range from groups working with children, the elderly, and the homeless to working with large non-profit organizations such as the SPCA, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Habitat for Humanity.

– What Are Our COAR Events? –

Throughout the school year, COAR organizes several events on and off campus to create an opportunity for students to help better the community. Some of these events include Into the Streets, a trick-or-treat for area kids, a Gift Box Drive for Head Start, a Charity Poker Tournament, and participation in the nationwide Act! Speak! Build! Week in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity. Each event is fun and unique for students and the general public. All events require help from our COAR Events Crew, the UMW campus community, and the general public to make each successful!
