What a great success our Variety Show was this past weekend–thank you to all that came out to support us and a big thank you to our performers. You were great!! We were able to raise a sufficient amount for our Alternative Spring Break program and for Habitat for Humanity.
Spring Forward Festival! This Sunday, April 1st, 1-4 PM will be our Spring Forward Festival. We are looking forward to our last big event this semester and hope everyone from the community can come! This event is open to all of the community and is geared towards children. There is a large egg hunt (one for older kids and one for younger children.) There is food, crafts, and games. And the best part: it’s free! We are crossing our fingers for great sunny weather this Sunday.
So, come on out this Sunday at Brompton–the President’s residence–for some spring fun and even see our bunny! If you have any questions about it, feel free to call us at (540) 654-1802.
This year, COAR is hosting our first annual Variety Show in place of our usual Poker Tournament. We are very excited for our Show because it will be showcasing the many different talents of our University. We will have the UMW Dance Team, Eagle Bhangra, Invoice, One Note Stand, Symfonics, Ball A’Cappella, UMW Breakers, Alter Egos, and a special guest performing.
COAR’s ‘Bringin’ Down the House…or Buildin’ it Back Up” is a completely free event for the students and the community. However, donations are encouraged, as 100% of the proceeds raised at this event go to Habitat for Humanity and Alternative Spring Break. This money is used on trips that go to places with Habitat sites. The students help build and work on houses. We will also be giving out raffle prizes to the lucky few with the right raffle tickets!
We are very proud of our new event and hope to see you there! It is Saturday, March 24th 2-4 PM in Dodd Auditorium.
Spring semester is going very well for COAR and we hope it’s going well for you too! We have activities coming up, one of which is new!
Act! Speak! Build! Week is THIS WEEK! This is a national week to promote poverty and hunger awareness. Usually we have this week later in the semester but because of our new event, we are having it the week of February 20th-23rd.
Wednesday we will be making snack packs on campus for local underprivileged children. This is a popular event since students passing by stop and create and decorate the packs. They are brown paper bags decorated with markers and filled with snacks. Later that day, COAR and its volunteers will be visiting a local Food Bank to volunteer at.
On Thursday, we will be having our annual Habitat for Humanity picnic table build. We have been fortunate to garner lots of volunteers–specifically sports teams–to build the picnic tables. This will be in the center of campus. We have about 6 tables to build!
COAR will be going again to Volunteer to Cheer at the Special Olympics this year! It is on March 16-17 and we know we are going to have as great as a time this year as we did last year. It is a great time and we suggest everyone sign up to cheer! Check out a previous post about the event from last year.
COAR’s first annual Variety Show will be held on March 24th. We will be inviting community members and senior citizens in local retirement and nursing, etc. homes and hope they can come. We will be showcasing UMW’s very own talented performing arts groups! Stay tuned for more information on the event.
Lastly, our Spring Forward Festival will be held on April 1st this year. This festival is for the community children and consists of a giant egg hunt and lots of fun spring crafts on the President’s lawn! This is a great event and we encourage families in the community to attend and students to volunteer at!
Hello and welcome back!
Community Outreach and Resources is really looking forward to this semester and we hope you are too. We have excellent events this semester we are excited to share with you!
Be on the look out for information on our annual Act! Speak! Build! Week, a week to promote hunger and poverty awareness and take action against it. We will be doing a variety of activities in the community to benefit people in need. The scheduled week is February 20th-23rd.
We will be starting something new this semester to replace our usual Poker Tournament. We will be putting on a Variety Show showcasing the many talents of our students. We hope to profitable in this endeavor, as all donations go to charity. Additionally, we would like to cater to people in nursing homes for this event and hope we can provide some entertainment for them! This will be on March 24th.
And lastly, our Spring Forward Festival will be on April 1st. This is a great egg hunt for children in the community to come to free of charge. Every year attendance gets larger and we would love for anyone to come! There will be candy and crafts.
COAR has had a fantastic fall semester thanks to the help of all our volunteers! We just finished our Headstart Gift Box Drive and it was the most successful drive yet.
Headstart is a preschool program for underprivileged children and we collected and wrapped boxes for all the boys and girls in the Spotsylvania, Fredericksburg, and Stafford Headstart Programs. This year we did 695 boxes! We had a wrapping party in the dining hall where lots of students came to wrap and pick up boxes. When everyone returned their boxes we had a stuffing party to fill remaining boxes with various toys, coloring books, hats/gloves/socks, and donated toothbrushes and toothpastes.
We would really like to thank all the dentists who generously donated their brushes and paste. There is so much, we will have extra for next year which is perfect. Thank you to all faculty, staff, and students who agreed to fill a box(es). Needless to say, the children will be overjoyed at receiving their gifts.
Probably the best part about this event is that we were able to deliver the gifts to all the children of Fredericksburg Headstart. Our Dean of Student Affairs, Dean Rucker, dresses up as Santa every year and delivers all the presents to all the children! So, a big thank you to everyone that helped us and the picture below shows only a small fraction of the happiness of the day!
First, a big thank you to all the volunteers who came out to help us for Pumpkin Palooza by being a tour guide or doing crafts with the kids! We really appreciate your support and dedication–we really couldn’t pull off such a successful event without you! We will be posting some memorable photos from the event soon.
Second, our last event of the semester is upon us: the Head Start Gift Box Drive! For those who do not know what this is, it is a holiday shoe box drive benefiting underprivileged children in the area. We encourage students and people in the community to pick up a box and decorate it (or get a decorated and wrapped box) and fill it with goodies that will please children like coloring books, toys, and books.
This is a great event to get into the giving spirit of the holidays and the children become overjoyed when they receive their presents. If you have $5-$10 to spare or want to get into the holiday mood, stop on by our office or email us for a box! We will be having a wrapping party on November 18 5-8 PM filled with holiday cheer, wrapping paper, and goodies! You won’t want to miss out on this event!
As always, if you have questions, don’t hesitate to email us at email@example.com
During the fall semester, COAR puts on a few seasonal and fun events. Mark your calendar because these will be rewarding experiences! Here is a layout of our events…
Into the Streets, October 1st, 1-4PM
Go out “into the streets” of Fredericksburg to take part in various activities that benefit the community!
The activities range from environmental, social, and historical–you can take your pick.
Pumpkin Palooza, October 30th
Trick or Treat around Campus!
Volunteer to walk with community children and families around campus as they trick or treat, or help out with crafts and games in the Great Hall. This will be a fun event because of all the cute children with their costumes!
Head Start, November/December
Volunteer to fill a shoebox with goodies for underprivileged children in the community!
There will be a wrapping party and we hope to set a new record of delivered gifts!
contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions!
Welcome UMW freshmen and transfers and welcome back UMW students! What a great year this will be, we are so excited for all the volunteer opportunities coming our way and how you all can get involved. Today is the Club Carnival and we will be on Ball Circle for sign ups and general interest. Additionally, we will be having our COAR Interest Meeting Wednesday, September 7th at 5 pm in the Great Hall. All our lead council members will be there to talk about their programs and we will have sign ups right after. This is a great way to get some volunteer opportunities and meet other people who share the same interests as you. We hope to see you there!
COAR would like to thank all of our volunteers for another record breaking year for COAR. Through COAR programs, UMW students volunteered over 7,859 hours in the Fredericksburg community and on Alternative Break trips. For the second year in a row, UMW was named to the President’s Community Service Honor Roll. Check out the press release here!
COAR’s Annual Spring Forward Festival!
The annual festival thrown by Community Outreach and Resources went flawlessly this year, and we couldn’t have done it without our volunteers! The location was perfect, as was the weather (perfectly sunny.) Check out our flickr account, UMW COAR, for excellent pictures taken by our very own Professor Rao!
